	Celebrating an Incredible White Coat Wednesday!


	Thank you to everyone who participated in our successful White Coat Wednesday on June 10, 2026! We are grateful to the more than 40 pediatricians and residents who took time to champion policies that improve the health and well-being of North Carolina’s children. This year's event featured a special focus on network adequacy and the pediatric subspecialist shortage. Thank you for the many ways you work to improve child health in North Carolina!


	Meet NCPeds' Leaders E. Paige Darnell, MD, MPH, FAAP UNC Health Caldwell


	Growing up in rural Indiana gave Paige Darnell, MD, MPH, FAAP, a unique perspective on pediatric medicine. Her hometown lacked a pediatrician, so she never experienced pediatric care firsthand as a patient, but during her obstetrics rotations, she found herself consistently drawn to caring for newborns. "I think there's so much time and effort in healthcare poured into taking care of disease in adult populations, whereas in pediatrics, from a medical standpoint only, we can intervene and prevent a lot of those chronic diseases," she said. "I'm taking care of them, in the medical sense, as the whole person." With a goal of practicing rural medicine, Paige joined the National Health Service Corps after completing her residency and accepted a position with UNC Health in Lenoir, where she has practiced ever since. She recently became Chief Medical Officer at UNC Health Caldwell, having previously served at Mulberry Pediatrics. Paige’s involvement with NCPeds began during residency and has only deepened over time. She is a frequent attendee of the NCPeds Annual Conference and currently serves on the Early Career Physician Committee. "The thing I look forward to the most every year is just being around other pediatricians at the Annual Meeting, and there's just so much camaraderie there. NCPeds really was that support for me when I first started here," she said. "I always feel so empowered after coming to those meetings. There's a whole community here that supports me and has the resources. It really gives me the energy I need to keep going." Paige earned her undergraduate degree in Applied Biology from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, her medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and her Master of Public Health at Lenoir-Rhyne University. She completed her residency in primary care pediatrics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Though she grew up in Indiana, Paige now calls Lenoir, N.C., home. She lives there with her husband and two children, and the family can often be found hiking western North Carolina's trails or visiting the Biltmore Estate.


	Strategic Priorities from our Updated Strategic Plan


	The North Carolina Pediatric Society recently refreshed our strategic plan to guide our work over the next several years. We are grateful to the nearly 200 members who completed the survey and to the committee members whose thoughtful work and leadership helped shape this process. Our member-identified strategic priorities are: Workforce – Support a robust and sustainable pediatric workforce by addressing barriers to entry, provider burnout, and negative perception of job burden. Child Mental Health – Promote the capacity of pediatric providers to address child mental health Vaccine Misinformation – Strengthen trusted pediatric voices to provide accurate information and counter misinformation on vaccines and child health across North Carolina. Resources – Ensure the sustainability of pediatric care in North Carolina by advancing adequate Medicaid and commercial payment, reducing administrative burden, and protecting access to pediatric practices. 	A Milestone for NCPeds: Announcing Elizabeth Hudgins’ Retirement


	After more than a decade of dedicated service, NCPeds’ Executive Director Elizabeth Hudgins will retire at the end of this year. We are grateful for everything that Elizabeth has done for NCPeds and the lasting impact that she leaves behind. Since joining NCPeds in 2014, Elizabeth has seen NCPeds through some critical times and her leadership was instrumental in forming the organization we are today. She guided staff and members through the unprecedented challenges of COVID-19, championed the successful merger of CHIP and Medicaid, and launched initiatives that will have lasting impact including a pediatric workforce program designed to strengthen the pipeline of care for North Carolina's children. Additionally, Elizabeth and the team she cultivated also made significant strides in fiscal stability, member communications, and operational infrastructure. We are already working to ensure that a smooth transition will take place later this year and will form a leadership committee to oversee the search for her successor. We plan to have the new Executive Director in place a few months before Elizabeth's last day to ensure continuity for members. We are thankful for Elizabeth's extraordinary service to our members, our partners, and the children of North Carolina! 	Meet NCPeds’ Members Ashley Johnson, IBCLC Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine


	Ashley Johnson, IBCLC, was first introduced to NCPeds in her role as President of the Pediatric Medicine Club at the Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine. After being involved with NCPeds for the past year, she has now joined our new Advocacy Committee. “I am so thankful to be a part of NCPeds as it continues to provide opportunities for growth, learning, and fellowship. I have met many people through NCPeds and have learned something different from each of them, bonding over a shared passion for the pediatric field,” she said. Ashley is in her second year at Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine with an expected graduation date of 2028. She plans to practice general pediatrics in rural North Carolina upon completion of her training. “My favorite part of the pediatric field is being present for many milestones in families' lives. When I worked as a Lactation Consultant, I was able to celebrate with families and watch newborns become healthy 1-year-olds. As a Pediatrician, I am excited to watch those milestones go farther into adolescence and then adulthood,” she said. Before enrolling in medical school, Ashley received her bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University and worked as a Board-Certified Lactation Consultant in a pediatric office in Raleigh. Ashley grew up in Asheboro, N.C. and currently lives in Lillington, N.C. She enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with her family, friends and her two Labrador Retrievers, Finley and Mauri.

	NCPeds Workforce Development Resources


	Member feedback consistently highlights pediatric workforce development as a key priority for NCPeds. Over the past year, we have leaned into this work with curated resources for pediatric trainees, including: An Advisory Panel for Pediatric Learners (AAPL) of residents and medical students to inform our work. A Brain Trust of pediatricians from a variety of practice settings to respond to identified learning needs Targeted webinars including: Loan Repayment Options in NC, A Day in the Life of a Pediatric Resident, Away Rotations, Auditioning and Internships which are archived on the Resources for Medical Students and Residents webpage (must log in to view) New podcast on the key considerations for employment contracts also on the webpage As part of this engagement strategy, NCPeds offers opportunities for trainees to connect, learn, and grow through dedicated programming at the Annual Meeting, taking place August 28–30, 2026, at the Washington Duke Inn in Durham. Members are encouraged to share these opportunities with trainees or mentees interested in pediatrics. The Call for Abstracts for the Saturday, Aug. 29 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. 2026 Resident Poster Session is now open. This annual opportunity invites pediatric residents to showcase their research, quality improvement projects, and clinical insights with peers and leaders in the field. The Poster Session highlights innovative work happening across the state while providing valuable experience in academic presentation and professional networking. The top three posters are recognized with cash awards. Applications are due by Saturday, May 23, 2026. The Meeting Ambassador Program is also accepting applications. This initiative introduces medical students interested in practicing pediatrics in North Carolina to NCPeds and offers hands-on involvement in the Annual Meeting. Ambassadors assist with event logistics, including staffing the registration desk and servicing as session timers, while gaining meaningful exposure to NCPeds and our members. Ambassadors receive financial support to attend the meeting, including hotel accommodations and mileage. Applications are due by Saturday, May 23, 2026. Building the pediatric workforce is a shared effort, so please be sure to stop by the 2026 Annual Meeting registration desk to say "hello" to our 2026 Meeting Ambassadors and attend the Resident Poster Session. 	Meet NCPeds’ Leaders Emily Hannon, MD, FAAP, IBCLC Western Wake Pediatrics


	As a first-time, expectant mom, Emily Hannon, MD, FAAP, IBCLC, knew little about breastfeeding. When the head of lactation services at Kaiser Permanente sought a physician liaison to assist with hospital lactation policies, Emily’s knowledge and passion for lactation and breastfeeding grew exponentially. She now serves on the executive committee of the AAP Section on Breastfeeding and shares the role of Chapter Breastfeeding Coordinator for North Carolina with Dr. Cherece Grier. “I got so interested in lactation medicine that a few years later the same head of lactation services encouraged me to obtain my IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) certification. I have enjoyed being involved with helping others learn about lactation and breastfeeding medicine and supporting families regardless of how they choose to feed their infants,” she said. She continues to work with parents and families to educate them about the benefits of breastfeeding. Her pediatric office, Western Wake Pediatrics, offers an embedded IBCLC for families, regardless of their ability to pay for lactation services. In addition to her passion for lactation care, Emily also has been involved with the expansion of mental health care in pediatric offices. “Our office was one of the first pediatric offices in North Carolina to participate in the Collaborative Care Model of mental health care. We are proud to have a licensed clinical mental health counselor on our team, working directly with our providers to help our patients with anxiety, depression, and ADHD,” she said. Emily has been a pediatrician since 2007 and has been a co-owner of Western Wake Pediatrics in Cary since 2020. She previously served as medical director of the Duke University Newborn Nursery and as Assistant Chief of Pediatrics at Kaiser Permanente in South Sacramento, Calif. She became involved with NCPeds when she moved to North Carolina and now serves on the NCPeds Pediatric Council. Originally from Los Angeles, Emily moved to the East Coast for college and quickly fell in love with Vermont. She completed her undergraduate studies at Middlebury College and earned her medical degree from the University of Vermont, then went on to complete her residency and complete a year as chief resident at the University of Utah. Despite being Duke basketball fans, Emily and her family now call Chapel Hill home. She and her husband, along with their three daughters, enjoy hiking and watching movies together in their spare time.

	Meet NCPeds’ Leaders Anthony Cooley, MD, FAAP Mission Children’s Hospital


	With nearly three decades in pediatrics and a passion for lifelong learning, Anthony Cooley, MD, FAAP, is eager to join the NCPeds Education Committee and help colleagues stay current with advances in care. “Lifelong learning makes medicine exciting. Participating in planning pushes me to be up to date. Rapid advances in medicine can be overwhelming, and I appreciate education that is compact and digestible, offering straight-to-the-point clinical tools,” he said. “Part of my passion for continuing education is the sense of community that it creates. I love to meet other clinicians and hear their stories about work-life integration and how medicine is ‘really done in the trenches.’” He brings extensive experience, having served as Program Chair for the AAP National Conference, and Director for Pediatric Grand Rounds and Co-Chair of Continuing Medical Education at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. After moving to Asheville three years ago, Tony now works as a pediatric hospitalist at Mission Children’s Hospital. He previously spent 24 years at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University, where he continues to serve as Associate Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics. Although he retired from Emory in 2022, he continues to work part-time because of his devotion to caring for children and wish to contribute to his new community “I am so grateful for the privilege to be a pediatrician. It is a calling rather than a job for me. Children and parents always inspire me with their stories, resilience, and lessons to tackle challenges,” he said. “I worry about the decline in clinicians that we are seeing in some areas. My hope is that fostering our professional development with life-long learning while building community will bolster joy in medicine and well-being.” He completed his residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, serving as Chief Resident, and earned his medical degree and undergraduate degree from the University of Florida. Tony lives in Asheville with his spouse. He enjoys camping, hiking, exploring beaches, staying active at the gym, paddling, practicing yoga, and anything with his dog. He became a Kripalu yoga instructor in 2016.

	Become an NCPeds Medical Student Ambassador!


	NCPeds is now accepting applications for two Meeting Ambassadors for the 2026 Annual Meeting, being held August 28–30 at the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club, Durham. Medical students who are interested in practicing pediatrics in North Carolina are encouraged to apply. Meeting Ambassadors will have the opportunity to connect with pediatricians and current residents, learn about NCPeds, and attend educational and networking sessions. Meeting Ambassadors are also invited to join the NCPeds Past President Dinner on Thursday night and the Early Career Physician Mixer on Saturday afternoon – both excellent networking opportunities! Ambassadors will assist with registration, serve as timekeepers for speakers, take event photos, and support other tasks as needed. 	Tax Savvy Ways to Support NCPeds


	This tax season, consider supporting NCPeds through strategic charitable giving which can maximize your gift to NCPeds while also boosting your tax efficiency. Some popular approaches to consider are: Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs): These distributions from an IRA can be used to satisfy required minimum distributions (RMSs). Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs): These accounts can be funded with appreciated stock, mutual funds or cash, and donors receive an income tax deduction in the year the donation is made. The donor can then make donations to their selected charities at any time of the year often through an efficient giving portal. Finally, new in 2026, taxpayers who take the standard deduction can claim an above-the-line deduction for cash contributions up to $1,000 or $2,000 for couples filing jointly. 	No Snow Day Here! 2026 NCPeds Winter Open Forum Goes Virtual


	When Storm Gianna said, “stay home,” NCPeds said, “log on.” The Winter Open Forum went virtual, and 90 pediatricians joined NCPeds for a snow day well spent — complete with on-point CME. A huge shout-out to our speakers for their flexibility and for delivering truly excellent content. A special welcome to the 17 members who attended their very first NCPeds event! As Tonye Burutolu shared, “Thanks to all of our wonderful speakers and organizers — this was my first NCPeds event, and I enjoyed it a lot!” We look forward to rebooking our 2027 Winter Open Forum in Greenville!


	Meet NCPeds’ Members Claire Bethel, MD University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill


	Claire Bethel, MD, is a Chief Resident in Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). She joined NCPeds at the start of her residency to gain insight into the profession, to gain mentorship and to exchange ideas with her colleagues. “You just build your network so much bigger through NCPeds than when you're a resident and your reach just extends much farther. And the perspectives that you can hear about are just invaluable,” she said. Initially planning to become a surgeon, Claire realized she wanted to explore pediatrics during a pediatric rotation. “I went on my pediatric rotation early in third year of medical school and realized that the medical team loves coming to work. These kids are really fun to have as patients,” she said. “I think I just like how resilient kids are. They can be incredibly sick and require a lot of invasive medications or intensive care, and then over the course of a couple days or weeks, they can be on the pediatrics floor, which I think is so rewarding.” In June, she will be entering a Pediatric Infectious Disease Fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital where she plans to explore research about fungal diseases in immunocompromised patients and the correlation between those diseases in adults and children. Her research will focus on ways to effectively identify those at risk, improving tests for the diseases and exploring new therapeutics for children. Before beginning her residency at UNC, Claire completed medical school at the University of South Florida in Tampa and her undergraduate degree at Wake Forest University. She grew up near Orlando, Fl., but now calls Chapel Hill home. In her spare time, you can often find her exploring hiking trails in the mountains and watching hockey.

	Dr. Kelly Kimple Named AIM Immunization Champion


	Kelly Kimple, MD, MPH, FAAP, Director of the Division of Public Health, was presented with the AIM Immunization Champion Award at the NCPeds Winter Open Forum in January. Presented by the Association of Immunization Managers, the award honors one Champion per immunization jurisdiction for outstanding leadership in advancing vaccination efforts for children and adults. Beth Meadows, RN, MSN, Provider of Clinical Services Unit Manager for the North Carolina Immunization Branch, shared,“Given the challenges public health is currently facing, Dr. Kimple's leadership will be needed now more than ever to ensure vaccine access and confidence continues in our state. Dr. Kimple is committed to making sure that access to life-saving vaccines is available to everyone, because every person deserves the protection and peace of mind that vaccination brings.” Congratulations to Dr. Kimple on this well-deserved recognition.

	2026 Charitable Giving Tax Changes


	Beginning January 1, 2026, changes to federal tax law expanded charitable giving incentives for more taxpayers. Under the new rules, donors may be able to claim a charitable deduction even if they do not itemize their tax returns. New Charitable Deduction Limits Up to $1,000 in charitable donations for single filers Up to $2,000 for married couples filing jointly This new “above-the-line” deduction applies only to cash gifts made directly to qualified public charities (not donor-advised funds or private foundations). Donations to NCPeds, a 501(c)(3) organization, are eligible for this charitable giving deduction. We are truly grateful for your continued support of NCPeds and our work on behalf of children and pediatric providers across North Carolina.


	Meet NCPeds’ Leaders Candace Howell, MD, FAAP NCPeds Finance and Development Committee


	Candace Howell, MD, FAAP, attended her first NCPeds meeting virtually during the pandemic. Initially, she joined to support a coworker who was presenting at the conference, but she quickly found the content compelling and felt inspired to become more involved. Since then, she has attended an NCPeds meeting nearly every year. “I really think the advocacy is beyond impressive. They’re just really boots on the ground, getting things done, and I just find it very impressive,” she said. “It’s a place where you can learn. It feels like this environment that is designed to help pediatricians and pediatric providers to grow. I think there’s a lot of good reasons to get involved.” Candace was especially drawn to NCPeds’ emphasis on collaboration among its members, the broader medical community, and elected officials. That spirit of partnership led her to join the NCPeds Finance and Development Committee. “It’s an opportunity to collaborate and learn more about the inner workings of the organization and hopefully make valuable contributions however I can. It’s an opportunity to learn and grow with the organization,” she said. Based in Charlotte, Candace serves as an Assistant Specialty Medical Director in the Division of General Pediatrics at Atrium Health Levine Children’s (AHLC) and as a general pediatrician at AHLC Davidson Pediatrics. She earned her undergraduate degree from Emory University, her medical degree from The Ohio State University, and completed her residency at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She is particularly interested in expanding collaboration between obstetrics and pediatrics to help reduce maternal and infant mortality rates and is passionate about advancing health equity through collaborative community partnerships. Outside of medicine, she channels her love of dance and movement through her performances with the Shae Movement African Arts dance group in Charlotte. Her love of dance also led her to co-found and teach with Hip Hop with a Doc at a local YMCA in Ohio, a program that used dance instruction to encourage physical activity among patients with obesity and their parents. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking with her dogs or settling in for an episode of The Great British Bake Off.

	NCPeds' 2025 At A Glance


	As 2025 comes to a close, we are reflecting on the important work NCPeds accomplished together with our members and partners. It has been a busy and productive year, and we extend our sincere thanks to each of our board members, members, and partners for making this progress possible. Successfully advocated for the pause of the recently implemented Medicaid cuts. This effort would not have been possible without our engaged members and partners. Advocacy at the State and Federal Levels. NCPeds weighed in on key policy issues, including federal Medicaid and SNAP cuts, rural health funding priorities, and state Medicaid reductions. Hundreds of members participated in seven action alerts. Thank you to our President for presenting to the Child Fatality Task Force on certified midwives and to our Policy Chair for presenting to the Highway Safety Commission on cannabis. Delivered high-quality, pediatric-focused, North Carolina–specific education through our signature events. Providers had the opportunity to earn up to 19 CME (including CME designed to meet the NC Medical Board requirement on opioid education) and 10.5 MOC, and Practice Managers had access to 12.5 CEUs. Continued focus on Child Mental Health. We shared more than two dozen mental health resources. Our promotion of NC-PAL has helped connect hundreds of thousands of North Carolina children to mental health services, and our support for the Collaborative Care Model has provided dozens of practices with new tools to meet patient needs. Ramped up our work supporting pediatric learners. We expanded our successful Career Connects events, bringing together Pediatric Residents and established pediatricians for meaningful conversations about careers in community pediatrics. More Career Connects events are planned for 2026! We hosted a virtual Ask a Pediatric Resident Panel with more than 50 attendees — and rave reviews. We also created a webpage and monthly newsletter just for residents and medical students. Continued deep engagement in Medicaid reform efforts, including providing essential resources for the December 1, 2025 launch of the Children and Families Specialty Plan, which covers children and youth in foster care. Directed NCPeds’ investments to community banks, supporting under-resourced communities while continuing to meet NCPeds’ investment goals. Learning and collaboration opportunities. Our weekly Solution Share series (Tuesdays, 5:30 – 6:00 p.m.) continues to bring members together to problem-solve and learn, with guest speakers covering ACIP updates, immigrant child health, and measles prevention. We also launched a new monthly lunchtime “PMSS” session, designed for Practice Managers and modeled after our successful existing Solution Share. Immunization and measles resources. Responding to member requests, we shared more than ten sets of immunization resources and six focused on measles, including AAP and AHEC materials. We engaged our Congressional delegation on immunization issues, hosted a national expert at our Annual Meeting, and featured additional speakers during Solution Share. We are deeply grateful for our dedicated members, partners, and supporters who make this work possible. Thank you for all you do for children, families, and pediatric professionals across North Carolina.


	NCPeds Practice Managers Spring Retreat Registration Open


	Registration is officially open for the 2026 NCPeds Practice Managers Spring Retreat. This annual gathering is a chance for practice managers from across the state to recharge, exchange ideas, and strengthen the connections that keep pediatric practices thriving. Join us March 18-20 as we enjoy the charm of The Inn at Elon, a setting framed by botanical gardens, walking paths, and the energy of Elon University’s campus. Our Education Committee is hard at work planning a great lineup of speakers, sessions, and networking opportunities. The committee is excited to share that Pediatric Management Institute (PMI) has already agreed to present and other great presentations are in the works! Register at our site.


	Meet NCPeds’ Leaders Weili Chang, MD, FAAP ECU Health


	As the newest member of NCPeds Membership Committee, Weili Chang, MD, FAAP is looking forward to recruiting new members and providing members with the same welcome that she received as a new member nearly 11 years ago. “I remember getting an email as well as a handwritten note when I became a member, and I found that to be very welcoming coming in as a new attending,” she said. As a member she has been particularly interested in advocacy through NCPeds and speaking out on behalf of the children and adolescents in the state, especially in rural North Carolina where medical access can be scarce. She enjoys helping medical students and residents learn how they can positively impact medical needs statewide. “I found that our patients especially in our eastern part of the state are very resource poor, and I would like to be able to help our patients with any of those resources that are available. A big part of it comes from teaching the residents and medical students to get them involved in any advocacy and letting them know how in need our areas are,” she said. Weili is a Neonatologist at ECU Health and the Health System Transformation and Leadership Distinction Track Director with the Brody School of Medicine. She was drawn to neonatology during her second year of residency when one memorable patient and their family came under her care. She maintains communication with them to this day and is passionate about helping NICU babies get the vital care they need. Weili received her bachelor’s degree from Wellesley College and her medical degree from Temple University. She completed her residency at Texas Tech Health El Paso and her Fellowship at East Carolina University. She was born in China and has lived in the United States since she was 10 years old. She lives in Greenville with her family which includes her two children, and she enjoys taking care of her plant babies and reblooming orchids in her spare time.

	NCPeds 2025 General Fund Campaign Update


	We know this has been an exceptionally challenging year for pediatricians and pediatric practices across North Carolina. We are grateful for the compassionate, high-quality care you continue to provide to our state’s children despite the pressures you face. We also recognize that this may not be the right time for everyone to give. For those who are able and wish to do so, there is still time to support the NCPeds General Fund before the campaign closes on December 31, 2025. Your contribution strengthens our advocacy, educational programs, and ongoing support for pediatric professionals across the state. As a gesture of appreciation, all individual and practice donors are recognized on the NCPeds website and at our 2026 in-person events. We so appreciate your meaningful support of NCPeds and our work! And we are grateful to be in this with such amazing partners!

	With Gratitude This Thanksgiving


	On this Thanksgiving weekend, we hope each of our members is enjoying time with family and friends. This time of year reminds us how much we have to be thankful for — especially you, our amazing members. NCPeds’ work is truly a team effort, and, with grateful hearts, we thank you for sharing and supporting our vision: that every North Carolina child grows up healthy and thrives. Here are just a few of the many things we’re giving thanks for this year: Our 2,200+ members who keep NCPeds strong, children healthier, and one another supported. Proudly supported Asheville and Western North Carolina through our Annual Meeting, providing meaningful learning and networking opportunities along with 12.75 CME and 10.5 MOC credits. An at-capacity White Coat Wednesday amplified the voice of pediatrics, connecting directly with state legislators. Continued to strengthen our pediatric workforce initiatives, including via our popular Career Connects for residents and an Ask the Pediatric Resident panel attended by more than 50 medical students. Hosted special Solution Shares speakers on a variety of timely topics including, measles readiness for pediatric practices, ACIP changes, caring for children in immigrant families, debt reduction programs and the new Medicaid plan for children in foster care. Free CME benefited almost 200 members towards meeting the NC Medical Board opioid education requirement. Continued deep engagement on recently implemented cuts for Medicaid services, including action alerts for both clinicians and practice managers, on-going meetings and communication with leadership and other partners, a press statement, and a widely-used membership survey detailing anticipated impacts of the cuts. Our president has testified on a variety of issues at the NC General Assembly. Our exceptional, all-volunteer Board, which contributes more than 1,000 hours each year guiding NCPeds’ strategic direction. Our engaged committee members — more than 10 internal committees and 30 external — ensuring that the pediatric perspective is always represented and heard. Our individual and practice donors, whose generosity keeps NCPeds fiscally strong and ready for the work ahead. We are deeply thankful and honored to represent North Carolina’s outstanding pediatric healthcare providers and practice managers. 	Meet NCPeds’ Leaders Jessica Eubanks, DO, FAAP ECU Health


	Jessica Eubanks, DO, FAAP, recently joined the NCPeds Early Career Physician Committee. Jessica joined NCPeds as a resident and is excited to become more involved as she helps new physicians transition from residency to fellowship and beyond. After completing her residency in 2024, she knows first-hand how the committee can support new physicians entering into the first stages of their careers. “What I like most about being involved in NCPeds is the sense of community and collaboration. It brings together passionate pediatricians who are committed to improving child health across North Carolina,” she said. She is currently a Neonatologist with ECU Health. “I enjoy the fast-paced, critical care side of neonatology, paired with the incredible blessing of caring for some of the tiniest babies and their families. While my job is not always easy, I find deep fulfillment in supporting children and their families through some of the most challenging and vulnerable moments of their lives,” she said. “My goal is to not only care for the tiniest patients in the NICU but also to help set the foundation for healthier futures for all children.” She received her medical degree from the Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Jessica lives in Greenville, N.C. with her family, and you’ll often find them enjoying the warm weather at the beach or the pool or playing in their yard with their young son. And, as an avid basketball fan, you can often find her cheering on her favorite UNC Tar Heels!

About CATCH Grants The Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) program helps pediatricians turn ideas into action by funding community-based projects that improve health outcomes for underserved children. Grants of up to $10,000 are available to support innovative efforts, with funding cycles in spring and fall. 	Meet NCPeds’ Leaders Barbara Leach NCPeds’ Board of Directors


	Meet Barbara Leach, one of the newest members of the NCPeds Board of Directors. “I am honored to be a member of the NC Pediatric Society Board. What I value most about NCPeds is its commitment to creating a stronger future for children by lifting up diverse voices and ensuring every child has a healthy start in life. This is an opportunity to contribute directly to work that shapes the well-being of children and families across North Carolina,” she said. After 26 years with UNC-Chapel Hill, Barbara retired from the Family Support Program at UNC’s School of Social Work in December 2024. She has spent more than 35 years in family leadership and advocacy, with a special focus on relational health, early childhood development, and supporting children with special health care needs, behavioral and mental health concerns, and their families. In addition, she has championed family and community engagement to advance child and family well-being. She is also co-owner of Quandary Lake Mushroom, a women- and minority-owned small business, where she recently launched QLM Gourmet Mushroom Pâté, a plant-based specialty food brand that reflects her passion for healthy living and entrepreneurship. She lives in Raleigh, N.C. Beyond her advocacy work, Barbara enjoys time with family and friends, as well as traveling.

	NCPeds Honors 2025 Award Winners


	We were proud to honor some of the state’s most dedicated child health providers during the 2025 NCPeds Annual Meeting in Asheville. Each year we honor individuals and organizations who have shared in NCPeds’ vision that each and every North Carolina child grows up healthy and thrives, and this year’s award winners have made tremendous strides towards helping North Carolina’s children. “This year’s award winners truly embody the spirit of NCPeds and our dedication to improving the health of every child in the state. From helping communities live through the devastation of Hurricane Helene to improving access to mental health tools for children and seeing young physicians excel in their careers, our winners show what can be achieved through strong collaboration and partnerships,” said Theresa McCarthy Flynn, MD, MPH, FAAP. The Excellence in Public Service to Children Award (pictured above left) which recognizes outstanding achievement to improve the health and wellbeing of children and adolescents was presented to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and the North Carolina Department of Public Safety for their efforts in response to Hurricane Helene. The Outstanding Academic Service Award (pictured above center) which recognizes outstanding efforts to improve the health and wellness of all children in our state was presented to Gary R. Maslow, MD, MPH, of Duke Health, for exemplifying how academics can work together and promote child health in the community. This year we awarded a Rising Star Award (pictured above right) to two pediatricians: Michelle Curtin, DO, FAAP, of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and Mya Sendak, MD, FAAP, of Duke Health. The award is presented to a pediatrician(s) within his/her first ten years of completion of post-graduate training, in residency or fellowship, who has demonstrated excellence in the community by contributions to clinical medicine, research, education or advocacy in pediatrics. Congratulations to each of the winners! And thank you for everything you do to help our state’s children and adolescents.

	Meet NCPeds Leaders Brett Loftis, J.D., Ed.D. Board of Directors


	Our newest board member, Brett Loftis, J.D., Ed.D., has joined the NCPeds Board of Directors as a Community Member. Brett, who began working with at-risk children when he was 19 and became a Guardian Ad Litem at age 20, brings a lifelong dedication to helping children to our board. “When I was growing up my grandmother was a foster parent. I always had foster aunts and uncles who were my same age,” he said of what inspired him to become involved in children’s advocacy. Brett currently serves as the President and CEO of Crossnore Communities for Children, a child welfare association that has been serving children for 115 years. The organization provides a continuum of child welfare services including foster care, campus-based foster care and professional foster parenting across North Carolina. He previously served terms on the Child Fatality Task Force and worked as Executive Director for the Council for Children’s Rights in Charlotte, a law office and advocacy center dedicated to children’s issues. While there he founded the pediatric advocacy rotation for pediatricians in the Charlotte area to allow doctors to learn about their roles in public affairs. He received his undergraduate degree from Furman University, his law degree from Wake Forest Law School and his Doctor of Education from Trevecca Nazarene University. Brett lives in Newland, N.C. He and his wife have three sons and a dog, Rocky, who often accompanies him to work. He is an avid reader and traveler.


	David Tayloe, Jr. Wins 2025 F. Edwards Rushton CATCH Award


	Congratulations to David Tayloe, Jr., MD, FAAP, who was recently awarded the 2025 F. Edwards Rushton CATCH Award. We were proud to nominate him for this prestigious award which recognizes an outstanding CATCH grantee whose CATCH project has developed over time and expanded beyond its original goals to positively impact child health. Dr. Tayloe was recognized for successfully advocating for improvements in child health at the community level. He is the founder of Goldsboro Pediatrics and has received five CATCH grants over 20 years where he’s addressed issues ranging from breastfeeding, asthma, oral health, obesity, to mental and behavioral health. In addition to being a Past President of NCPeds, he served as President of the AAP in 2009. 	2024–2025 Carolina Collaborative Annual Report


	The 2024–2025 Carolina Collaborative (CC) Annual Report highlights significant progress in child health across the Carolinas, with North Carolina clinicians leading many initiatives. Major statewide impact stems from a $1.5 million, three-year grant to address disparities in child mental health through the “Six Conditions of Systems Change” framework. CC is partnering with AP Enterprises and Openfields to co-create an integrated child mental health strategy across the Carolinas from the perspective of the general pediatrician. The report also includes updates on CC’s ongoing efforts in Early Relational Health, ACEs/Toxic Stress and Food Insecurity. NCPeds Board member, Ellie Erickson, MD, FAAP, IMH-E®, serves as the North Carolina Lead for Carolinas Collaborative with many other NCPeds members serving in leadership roles. 	Meet NCPeds' New Board Members


	At the 2025 Annual Meeting, we welcomed our new slate of board members for 2025-2026. Along with our returning members, we are excited to introduce four new board members who are leaders in pediatrics and children’s health care. Elizabeth "Ellie" Erickson, MD, FAAP, IMH-E®, is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Duke Children’s Primary Care in Durham. Barbara Leach retired from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work in December 2024. Ginger Locklear, MD, FAAP, is the Medical Director for Children’s Health of Carolina in Pembroke. Brett Loftis, J.D., Ed.D., serves as the President and CEO of Crossnore Communities for Children. We are so fortunate to have a wonderful group of leaders on our board of directors, and we thank each of them for their dedication and service.


	2025 Annual Meeting


	Downtown Asheville provided the perfect backdrop for our 2025 Annual Meeting. We had three packed days of informative sessions, amazing speakers, and fun with all of our members and attendees. A HUGE thank you to our speakers, sponsors, exhibitors, and attendees for making this conference one to remember. This event would not have been possible without the help of our dedicated Education Committee (listed below). Thank you to each of them for their hard work in making this event such a success. 	Meet NCPeds’ Leaders Ellie Erickson, MD, FAAP, IMH-E® Duke Children’s Primary Care


	For Ellie Erickson, MD, FAAP, IMH-E® serving on the NCPeds board is about educating her fellow pediatricians and building long-lasting relationships to help improve child health in N.C. “The best way to be connected to other pediatricians and other child health professionals in our state is to really know what is going on at a local level. If you want to have your finger on the pulse of what’s happening in child health in North Carolina, the best way to do that is to be a member of NCPeds and read Elizabeth’s emails every week,” she said. Ellie joined NCPeds as a resident at Duke University, where all residents were offered the opportunity to join the association. “It was a great way to be introduced. I don’t think I understood that there was the AAP and then state chapters. Having that automatic enrollment was huge for me. Understanding more through my attendings and mentors of what their involvement was and what NCPeds did for children in our state really got me excited about being a part of it,” she said. Since that time she has been involved with multiple committees including organizing the PL2 and PL3 Career Days and serving on the Early Career Physicians Committee and the Membership Committee. She decided to pursue pediatrics during her undergraduate studies at Davidson College and has loved the community she’s found among her fellow pediatricians. “My favorite part of all of this is that we are a group of people who take our work very seriously, but we do not take ourselves too seriously. We are a group of people who are connected to our identities as community members and parents and teachers, and we’re so much more than just doctors,” she said. Originally from New York City, she completed her bachelor’s degree at Davidson College and her medical degree at Wake Forest University and now lives in Durham with her husband, three children and their two dogs and two cats. She is an avid reader who often reads multiple books at one time.


	July Career Connects


	On July 16, NCPeds hosted a Career Connect event for residents at the University of North Carolina (UNC). Career Connect replaces the traditional Career Days with tailored events to address the specific wants and needs of residents. NCPeds collaborated closely with the UNC Chief Residents — Molly DeCristo, MD; Maggie Fennell, MD; K’Shylah Whitehurst, MD; and Claire Bethel, MD — to ensure relevant content. Sessions included a contracting presentation by John Rusher, MD, JD, FAAP; a finance presentation by Allen Dobson, Jr., MD, FAAFP, and a panel discussion featuring pediatricians who shared their insights and career journeys. The event included a reception with networking time for the residents and panelists.

	NC-PAL is offering a new round of REACH (Recognizing and Elevating Children’s Mental Health) trainings this fall — completely free of charge. These engaging, interactive sessions are designed for pediatric professionals looking to build confidence in managing common mental health concerns in children and adolescents. Content includes practical tools and evidence-based strategies for addressing anxiety, depression, ADHD, and behavioral challenges and managing psychopharmacology. Each training is led by experienced mental health professionals and includes opportunities for Q&A, case discussions, and peer learning. 	Meet the 2025 Meeting Ambassadors


	We are excited to welcome Mazie Hughes and Samantha Meisel as the 2025 Meeting Ambassadors! Mazie is a student at Wake Forest University, expected to graduate in 2028. She has extensive experience in pediatrics, including volunteering to support pediatric cancer patients and their families. Additionally, she participated in a medical student research program that focused on the implementation of electronic workflows for WIC and SNAP in pediatric inpatient settings. Samantha is a student at Campbell School of Osteopathic Medicine, expected to graduate in 2027. She has worked in pediatric behavioral health clinics where she provided behavioral therapy to children and created behavior support plans for children with developmental or intellectual disabilities. Both Mazie and Samantha will be on-site for the duration of the Annual Meeting, assisting with registration and other tasks. Please take a moment to say hello and introduce yourself when you see them!


	Meet NCPeds’ Leaders Audrey Rhee, MD, FACS, FAAP NCPeds Early Career Physicians


	Audrey Rhee, MD, FACS, FAAP is the newest member of the NCPeds Early Career Physicians Committee. Previously a member of other AAP chapters in different states, Dr. Rhee joined NCPeds when she moved to North Carolina and began working at WakeMed as a Pediatric Urologist. “I think it’s important to be with likeminded folks who are advocating at a local level for patient access to healthcare and supporting all of us who are taking care of kids,” she said. She recently joined the Early Career Physicians Committee and is looking forward to helping and guiding new physicians as they embark on their pediatric careers. As a pediatric urologist at WakeMed in Raleigh, Dr. Rhee enjoys helping and caring for children and families. “I love the idea of taking care of the whole family because when a child comes in it’s not just taking care of them. Everyone in the household participates in the child’s care,” she said. “What we do for children has to last their lifetime.” Dr. Rhee obtained her undergraduate degree at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. She went to medical school at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY. She completed urology residency at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA and her pediatric urology fellowship at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. Dr. Rhee lives in Raleigh with her husband and three children. You’ll often find her at a local pool watching one of her children compete in a swim meet or enjoying the outdoors through hiking or paddleboarding.

	Successful White Coat Wednesday!


	The June 11th White Coat Wednesday had terrific attendance — and a lengthy waiting list! Resident William Randall, MD, said he was motivated to attend his first White Coat Wednesday because "our voices as pediatricians matter, and when we speak, legislators listen; White Coat Wednesday reminds us that even in the midst of our clinical training, advocating for improved systems and policies is essential to build and safeguard a brighter future for the children and families we serve." The day's activities included an advocacy update with NCPeds Executive Director, Elizabeth Hudgins, MPP, and our Lobbyist, Chris Hollis. Also included were individual legislative meetings focused on relationship building and workforce needs, a tour of the House floor with Rep. Timothy Reederm, MD, and a tour of the Senate floor with Sen. Jim Burgin. The Duke Pediatrics Health Equity and Advocacy Leadership (HEAL) track was grateful to partner with NCPeds for White Coat Wednesday. Larissa Truschel, MD, shared "as pediatricians, we witness firsthand how policy shapes the health and well-being of our patients. Being a Pediatrician goes beyond caring for children in our hospital and clinics — it means raising our voices on their behalf. On Wednesday, we proudly advocated for Medicaid, which covers nearly half of all children in the U.S. This is not a political issue — it’s a pediatric one." We are grateful to have such strong member support for NCPeds many advocacy efforts!

	AAP Responds to Firing of CDC ACIP


	The Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert Kennedy, Jr. recently announced that he has disbanded the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). In response, the AAP released a statement and materials about the importance of vaccines and its concern about to this development. 	Meet NCPeds’ Leaders Ginger Locklear NCPeds Finance & Development Committee


	After being an active NCPeds member for more than 12 years, Ginger Locklear recently joined the NCPeds Finance and Development Committee and is excited to get started. “My goal is to help NCPeds from this point forward with recommendations about what’s current and future investments that can help all of North Carolina pediatric groups,” she said. Ginger is the Medical Director for Children’s Health of Carolina in Pembroke. She completed her undergraduate degree at Dartmouth and her medical degree and residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She joined NCPeds during her residency and has enjoyed the friendships and shared experiences that she gets from her membership as she works with her colleagues on behalf of North Carolina’s pediatricians and children. She is passionate about helping our state’s rural and underserved populations including expanding options for virtual medicine and access to specialists and subspecialists. “For me, personally, working with the underserved populations has always been my life’s goal because they’re a group in need, but they also need to be heard on a larger platform. I like to talk with people who are in state positions about the needs of this area,” she said. “We were making great strides and all of medicine changed in 2020, and we’ve spent the last four years trying to rebuild. Because of people like Dr. Joseph Bell, Dr. Katie Lowry and other members of the Pediatric Society we keep making progress. You want the different areas of the state to be heard so anything that gives them a voice is important.” She lives in Maxton, N.C. with her husband and three kids. You’ll find the family enjoying sporting events and traveling in their free time.

	NCPeds Welcomes Meg Sullivan as the 2025 Annual Meeting Keynote Speaker


	We are thrilled to welcome Meg Sullivan, MD, MPH, FAAP, to the 2025 Annual Meeting as our keynote speaker. Dr. Sullivan is the former Acting Assistant Secretary for the Administration for Children and Families with the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and has held numerous positions with both federal and local public health agencies including serving as the Medical Director for Mecklenburg County Public Health in Charlotte and serving as the Deputy Medical Director for High Schools with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Dr. Sullivan’s keynote address will discuss “Vaccines and Vaccine Preventable Diseases” using the experience and knowledge she’s gained from two decades in pediatrics, public health and clinical settings. “The goal is to have my lecture be educational and highlight the important role of pediatricians and pediatric providers in vaccine education and administration,” she said. She will discuss the history of vaccines and the role that vaccines have played in preventing childhood diseases, the current climate surrounding vaccines and the role pediatricians play in educating families, and the future of vaccines and vaccine research. In addition, she’ll examine the partnership between pediatricians and parents and provide tips for creating a collaborative relationship to ensure children grow and develop in a healthy way. “If you look at the fundamental part of what we do in well child assessments, vaccinations truly are one of the key elements. It is very fair to recognize that parents may have questions about vaccinations, and pediatricians have a responsibility to be that trusted voice for parents to address their questions and talk about why vaccines are recommended,” she said. “It’s really important to make sure that we are up to date as new information, whether correct or not, may be circulating and provide the most accurate and current evidence-based information to parents.” Throughout her impressive career, Dr. Sullivan has held roles in clinical medicine in addition to local and federal public health. She worked as a physician in Guatemala and Washington, D.C. where she gained an appreciation for working closely with parents and the importance of easy access to medical care and vaccinations. Following her clinical roles, she assumed positions in public health in both New York City and Mecklenburg County, N.C. where she gained an understanding of the infrastructure needed for distribution of vaccines and the important role that government departments play in public health. Prior to leading the Administration for Children and Families at HHS, she served as Counselor to the Secretary for U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, seeing first hand how interconnected public health agencies are across the department and the importance of the federal role in vaccine access. Dr. Sullivan received her bachelor’s degree from Yale University, a Master of Public Health from The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and her medical degree from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. She grew up in Minnesota but now calls the Washington, D.C. area home where she’s busy raising five children and volunteering as a soccer and track coach.

	Meet NCPeds’ Staff Sarah Cabrera Director of Workforce Development


	We are excited to welcome the newest member of the NCPeds team, Sarah Cabrera. As our new Director of Workforce Development, Sarah will lead efforts to strengthen the workforce pathway in community pediatrics. She will also serve as a key resource for residents exploring a career in pediatrics. She has been hard at work planning our Career Connect events which replace our previous Career Days. Each Career Connect event will be held at pediatric residency programs across the state and will be tailored to the school’s class of residents. The next will be held July 16 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “As someone who started my own journey in a local pediatric office as a certified nursing assistant, I understand how valuable early exposure and mentorship can be. In this role, I am excited about the opportunity to support and inspire students who are just beginning to explore pediatrics, as well as providing meaningful guidance to residents already on that path,” she said. She received her bachelor’s degree in public health and Master in Healthcare Administration from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Sarah, the oldest of four siblings, grew up in Raleigh and cherishes her close-knit family. They enjoy Sunday dinners together as a weekly tradition. She has a passion for exploring new places and getting lost in a good book. In 2025, she’s well on her way to meet her ambitious goal of reading 100 books by year’s end.

	Advocating For Change With the AAP


	Your practice makes a difference for child health every day. Some pediatricians and other child health professionals also want to help inform the policies that shape the resilience of their communities, the resources of families and the health care of children. Because different policies are set by different entities (school, city, county, state, federal, etc.), it is important that when advocating for kids, your advocacy strategy matches the policy you wish to inform. If you are interested in national level issues, the American Academy of Pediatrics offers resources. One example is this new AAP webpage with information and resources on the AAP’s Medicaid and CHIP advocacy. Another is a Capital Check Up, a weekly email with updates on legislation and the ways AAP is working on behalf of members. Part of the April 11th issue is excerpted below. Federal Budget Negotiations: In April, the House voted 216-214 to pass a budget blueprint for their domestic policy agenda. The bill maintains a proposal that would, in effect, result in hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to Medicaid, The AAP will continue to mobilize members to contact their lawmakers, with more opportunities to come soon. Measles: AAP President Dr. Kressly shared a letter sent to Congress calling on the federal government to provide crucial support to states and localities to fight the measles outbreak, which includes taking measures to promote vaccine confidence. Read more from AAP News. Proposed USDHHS funding cuts: The AAP has been tracking the impacts of recently announced funding cuts to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Regional Head Start office closures and the elimination of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) childhood lead poisoning prevention program, and its newborn screening program are among the consequences of the sweeping cuts. Advocacy opportunity: If you are experiencing direct impacts on the ground from the recent public health funding cuts, please email patientstories@aap.org and share what you are experiencing. The more specific you can be about the source of the cuts and resulting outcomes in your community, the better. AAP advocacy staff will use these to inform strategy and to share with congressional offices and with the media to help paint a picture of how these cuts impact children and pediatricians.

	Meet NCPeds Leaders Courtney Brantley, MD, FAAP NCPeds Membership Committee


	Courtney Brantley, MD, FAAP, first became involved with NCPeds when she presented posters as a resident at the Annual Meeting and now serves on our Membership Committee where she’s looking forward to sharing the importance of and benefits of NCPeds membership with pediatric professionals across the state. “I love the fact that you get to work alongside pediatricians from other parts of the state with different perspectives. Some of our colleagues are doing amazing things and this organization allows you to learn about the pediatric landscape across the state and how you can get involved and impact things yourselves,” she said. Dr. Brantley is a Pediatric Hospitalist at Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte. In this role, she is involved with medical student and resident education and recently assumed the role of Pediatric Residency Program Director. “My favorite part of the pediatric field is being able to educate patients and their families regarding their health and medical conditions. As an educator at heart, it is incredibly rewarding to be able to help families navigate the health care system and help them to truly understand what is happening with their child. Our patients are people's children, their most prized gifts, so what a privilege it is to be a part of their care!” she said. Dr. Brantley attended Clemson University for her undergraduate studies and completed medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She currently lives in Charlotte with her husband and son and you’ll often find them traveling or spending time outdoors. She also enjoys creating floral arrangements for small events (pictured below).

	Join NCPeds' Advocacy Efforts During White Coat Wednesday


	June 11, 2025 is NCPeds’ White Coat Wednesday. This is a great time to come to Raleigh to learn more about advocacy strategies and to speak with policy-makers about child health issues. Much of effective advocacy is about strong and trusted relationships. If you haven’t already reached out to your elected official and other policymakers, White Coat Wednesday can be a great time to start. If you already have those relationships - thank you! White Coat Wednesday can be a good time to connect with colleagues and demonstrate the broad recognition and profound impact that public policies have on child health. In March, AAP had their sold-out Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C. which brought together hundreds of pediatricians from across the nation, culminating in a Day on the Hill focused on the importance of Medicaid for child health. Some of the Advocacy Conference participants from North Carolina joined our weekly Solution Share call to share about their experience from this overwhelmingly positive experience. "The advocacy conference was well attended by more than 400 pediatricians. After three days of working with this remarkable group of professionals and visiting our congressional offices to share data and stories, I found hope for the future of our children and our country. The impact made on us as well as our legislators – empowering!" said Charlotte Riddle, MD, FAAP, and NCPeds Board Member. Our White Coat Wednesday will also focus on the importance of Medicaid for child health and for strong access to care. 	Meet NCPeds’ Team Chris Hollis C.S. Hollis & Associates


	The professionals at C.S. Hollis & Associates have helped NCPeds in our advocacy efforts for several years. As the Managing Partner of C.S. Hollis & Associates, Christopher Hollis represents our state’s pediatricians to elected officials alongside his colleagues Josh Lanier and Austin King and supports the work of our NCPeds staff and committees to advocate for pediatricians and children to help advance NCPeds mission. “My goal is to protect and promote the profession and work with the members and staff of the pediatric society to help the patients as well,” he said. “It’s my job as a consultant to an association to really act as their eyes and ears to pursue their goals while they continue to be the experts in their fields. And I would say we are very fortunate to have a willing and active membership for the pediatric society.” Chris has been a lobbyist for 25 years, and his firm offers a variety of services including fundraising consulting, member engagement and recruitment, and messaging and communications strategies. Growing up in a farming community in eastern North Carolina, Chris enrolled in North Carolina State University with a plan to major in agriculture. As he began taking political science classes, he soon discovered that his passion lay in helping others through advocacy. “I recognized the value early on of being involved in the local community and how that made a difference in everyone’s lives,” he said. Before founding C.S. Hollis & Associates, Chris held several positions including coordinating events for the Raleigh Convention Center, serving as Development Director for the Make A Wish Foundation for Richmond, and working as a non-attorney professional for large international law firms. Chris lives in Garner and enjoys spending time with his family including his two college-aged sons. He was active in his sons’ youth sports as they grew up, and he continues to coach youth football and wrestling. He has also recently rediscovered his love of golf.

	Meet NC’s Health Leaders Elizabeth Cuervo Tilson, MD, MPH, FAAP, FACPM N.C. Department of Health and Human Services


	For nearly eight years, pediatrician Elizabeth “Betsey” Cuervo Tilson, MD, MPH, has served as the State Health Director and Chief Medical Officer for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Service (NCDHHS). Betsey recently announced her departure from NCDHHS, but she leaves behind a legacy that will be felt for many years to come. “Dr. Tilson was (and is) truly the Swiss Army knife of state health officers,” Kody Kinsley, Secretary of the NCDHHS, said in a statement about her recent departure from NCDHHS. Throughout her career, Betsey has worked to combine public health with clinical medicine and encourage collaboration among professionals so that quality health services are accessible for everyone. And that has been most apparent in her time with DHHS. “What drew me to this job was thinking through how to bridge clinical medicine, public health, population health and bringing clinical into community,” she said. “People are so open to collaboration. I’ve found that people are hungry for collaboration and partnership. It’s been one of the most fun and rewarding parts.” During her NCDHHS tenure, Betsey has been involved in numerous public health issues including the COVID-19 pandemic where she worked tirelessly to help translate the latest science research into public policy and, most recently, on the state’s Helene Response where she helped ensure small medical practices received needed supplies, staffing and infrastructure to continue serving patients. A major focus of her time at NCDHHS has been leading the Department in integrating social drivers including food insecurity, housing insecurity, transportation, and interpersonal violence/toxic stress into statewide policy initiatives which led to a whole-person health mentality. Social drivers are now automatically integrated into the daily NCDHHS work. A key piece of that work is the Healthy Opportunity Pilots which connect patients covered by Medicaid with needed social services. The program lowered social risks, decreased emergency room visits and hospitalizations and saved $85 per person per month in medical costs. It also fuels economic investment in our communities, which can also improve the health of the community. The program received authorization for an additional five years through the federal government in December 2024. “All the work around the social drivers of health is now showing really good data that when you give people those basic needs, you improve health, decrease healthcare utilization and decrease healthcare costs. We really are a leader in the country, and we’ve been sharing our experience with so many states. I’m so very proud of that. Not only did we prove it, but we set up the infrastructure to do it,” she said. Another focus of her time at NCDHHS has been addressing violence, including gun violence, as both a public health and public safety issue. She led the development of a white paper on violence as a public health issue, informed by a roundtable discussion of law enforcement, trauma surgeons, public health officials and NCPeds. In March 2023, North Carolina created the Office of Violence Prevention as a result, and has been working to support initiatives around safe storage, hospital and community-based violence interruption programs, suicide prevention, re-entry support, and protecting victims of domestic violence. Betsey’s holistic approach to medicine and public health and policy was formed in medical school when an attending on her pediatric rotation inspired her to practice preventive medicine and led her to become board certified in both pediatrics and preventive medicine. “Let’s keep people healthy in the first place instead of always trying to cure them on the backend,” she said. She received her undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College, her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and her Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed residencies in both Pediatrics and General Preventive Medicine/Public Health. It is that combination of public health and medical training that she has continued throughout her career. Betsey spent 26 years as a primary care pediatrician for the Wake County Human Services Child Health Clinic where she was able to provide holistic and comprehensive care to people from many backgrounds and cultures. “It just was a great experience to be able to use my privilege to help others, to show kindness and compassion for others, and really think through how to get those kids and that family on the best footing,” she said. “We had people from all over the world, so it was so interesting as well for me to learn from people from other countries and to give service to people who are sometimes the most vulnerable and marginalized.” In addition, she spent 14 years working as medical director for Community Care of North Carolina where she worked to ensure providers and care management support were integrated in communities across the state. She has been an active member of NCPeds for many years where many are honored to call her a colleague and inspiration.

	Looking Back on NCPeds' 2024 Accomplishments


	As 2024 comes to a close, we are reflecting on all of the amazing things that happened throughout the previous 12 months. We have had an incredible year and thank each of our board members, members and partners for making each of these things possible. Signature events offered Pediatric-focused, NC-specific education! Providers had the opportunity to earn up to 20.75 CME and 10.5 MOC while Practice Managers had the opportunity to earn up to 16.5 CEUs. Hosted NCPeds' first-ever Career Connects which brought together Pediatric Residents and established Pediatricians for an evening focused on careers in community pediatrics. More Career Connects events are planned for 2025! Distributed 500 gun locks across 44 practices and 23 counties. Successfully advocated for modifications to the Medicaid Preferred Drug List in response to NC pediatrician identified medication shortages as well as lifting prior authorizations for some ADHD medications. Shared almost 60 mental and behavioral health resources. Offered child mental health topics at all physician CME events (including NC-PAL offerings and information about the Collaborative Care Model but not including information about Tailored Care Management or Plans). Helped inform Helene response and link practices with supports, including stabilization payments. (Reminder, it’s really great when your contact information is current.) Continued to be deeply involved in ongoing Medicaid reform efforts, including submitting written materials, attending dozens of hours of meetings, troubleshooting efforts with PHPs, information sharing with members including on Tailored Plan roll-out and more. Directed NCPeds’ investments to community banks to help support under-resourced communities while continuing to meet NCPeds’ investment goals. We are so appreciative of our dedicated members, partners and supporters who help make this work possible.

	Meet NCPeds’ Leaders David Tayloe, III, MD, FAAP NCPeds Vice President


	After serving in numerous roles at NCPeds, David Tayloe, III became the new NCPeds Vice President at our Annual Meeting in August. He previously served four years as the organization’s Treasurer and a term as Secretary. David has long been an active member of NCPeds and has served on the board of directors and numerous committees. He was the co-coordinator of the PL-3 Career Day alongside NCPeds’ Treasurer Anna Miller-Fitzwater, was one of the founding members and co-chairs of the Early Career Physicians Committee, served on the Education Committee and, during his time as Treasurer, served as co-chair of the Finance and Development Committee. “One of the most interesting aspects of NCPeds is that the organization has something to offer pediatricians working in almost any setting. There are educational opportunities, advocacy initiatives, networking events, practice management tips, solution shares to work through issues or learn the latest and greatest. NCPeds offers such a variety of options!” he said. He enjoys the training and networking opportunities that NCPeds provides for its members. “I learn so much from other members and leaders of NCPeds, and they inspire me to be a better pediatrician and advocate for my patients and the children of North Carolina. Coming from a private practice, I also appreciate the educational opportunities offered to members,” he said. David has been practicing medicine for 14 years and is a pediatrician and partner at Coastal Children’s Clinic which has offices in New Bern, Havelock and Maysville. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He lives in New Bern where you can find he and his family enjoying time on the water either boating, fishing, swimming or sailing. He has also recently taken up a new hobby as a baker and enjoys trying new bread recipes.

	Thank You to Our Members


	We hope that each of our members enjoys a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday filled with family and friends. In this season of thanks, we take a moment to thank each of our members, partners and supporters. NCPeds' work is truly a "team sport" and with grateful hearts we thank our amazing teammates who share our commitment to a vision where each and every North Carolina child grows up healthy and thrives. Here are just a few of the things we are giving thanks for this year: Our amazing 2,100 members who help to keep NCPeds strong, children healthier and each other supported. All the Helene Helpers both in Western NC and beyond who have brought smarts, time and resources to help families through an unprecedented natural disaster. The opportunity to connect with members at our signature-events, including the sold-out Annual Meeting which offered 12.75 CME, 10.5 MOC and 10 CEUs. The nearly 60 pediatricians who participated in White Coat Wednesday to lift up some of the pressing issues facing pediatrics to legislators. The grant NCPeds received to strengthen our pediatric workforce efforts which allowed NCPeds to create a new staff position focused on this critically important work (see profile below). Our rock star all-volunteer Board that dedicates more than 1,000 hours per year setting the course for NCPeds. Our many memberswho serve on our more than 10 NCPeds committees and 30 external committees to ensure the pediatric voice is always “at the table” and heard. Our medical student Meeting Ambassadors for sharing their help and enthusiasm for pediatrics at our meetings. The individual and practice donors who help keep NCPeds fiscally strong for the work ahead! We are truly grateful and honored to represent NC's amazing pediatric healthcare providers and practice managers. Thank you!

	Meet NCPeds’ Staff Julie Messina Workforce Director


	As part of our ongoing effort to focus on workforce development in pediatrics, we have added a new position at NCPeds focused directly on that goal. We are excited to introduce Julie Messina who joined our staff in October as Workforce Director. In this new role, Julie will be working to develop relationships statewide and identifying and nurturing the interest in pediatrics and pediatric subspecialties. “What I’m most looking forward to is meeting more pediatricians and pediatric residents. They have a fantastic combination of motivation, intelligence and caring, and I find it really inspiring to be around,” Julie said. “I think helping the children of the state of North Carolina is a very noble goal, so I really wanted to work with NCPeds to help them achieve their mission.” Julie joins NCPeds after working at the Clinical Skills and Patient Simulation Center at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics where she served on the test development team. She is a graduate of Elon University and received a master’s degree in International Health Promotion from the University of Brighton in England. She spent nearly 10 years living abroad in Poland, England and Czechia where she taught English and worked on a public health walking project known as Walking For Health. Julie grew up in Maryland, and currently lives in Durham where she is very active in her local community. She serves on the board of directors for the Durham Parks Foundation and her local running club, Carolina Godiva Track Club. Additionally, Julie founded and organizes parkrun, a local chapter of an international free, weekly, timed 5K.

	Meet NCPeds' President Theresa McCarthy Flynn, MD, MPH, FAAP


	Our new NCPeds president, Theresa McCarthy Flynn, MD, MPH, FAAP, has a clear focus for the next two years. “First and foremost, we will continue the critical work that NCPeds has always done including promoting policies that help kids and fighting for pediatricians so those kids can get excellent care,” she said. “In addition, we have the chance to re-build the pediatric workforce pipeline, getting the message out that kids are important and that taking care of them is fun and rewarding.” Developing the next generation of pediatricians will be a huge focus of her presidency. NCPeds has already kicked off this work by hiring a full-time Workforce Director and is planning other strategies such as interest groups, partnerships, mentor programs, and preceptor supports. The goal is to reach anyone interested in pediatrics and give them the tools and supports they need to successfully enter practice. “The pandemic really put the whole field in a moment of crisis, and we need to recruit and train the future workforce to continue to provide excellent care to the kids,” she said. “Pediatrics is the best job in the world! I want to share that message with anyone and everyone thinking about joining this field.” Theresa first joined the NCPeds Board in 2002, when Dr. Peter Morris invited her to serve as the Medical Affairs Champion for the Board. In August 2024, she began her term as NCPeds President. During the interim years, Theresa served on a number of NCPeds Committees, including Policy, Membership, and Strategic Planning. She has also served previously as both Treasurer and Secretary. “NCPeds is amazing. It is a gathering of committed, passionate, capable, open-minded and open-hearted people who work together with a laser focus on what’s best for kids in the state,” she said. “A lot of what we do is behind the scenes and incredibly impactful. Many things that were pipe dreams turn into reality when NCPeds gets involved.” She has seen the organization make an impact statewide by advocating for Epi-Pens in all North Carolina schools, by shaping Medicaid Transformation, by urging a number of COVID relief measures including $25 million in state dollars for practices who may not have qualified for federal relief, and by merging HealthChoice into Medicaid. Theresa is a primary care pediatrician with WakeMed Physician Practices and Adjunct Assistant Clinical Instructor with the UNC School of Medicine. She moved to WakeMed from the Wake County Health Department, where she provided primary care services for more than twenty years. Prior roles also include chairing the Wake County Child Fatality Prevention Team and Community Child Protection Teams, and providing medical consultation for the Wake County Public School System. Throughout her career she has worked with children from varied backgrounds including immigrants, children in foster care, and children with learning disabilities. But one thing remains the same for every child. She delights in watching them and their parents grow and succeed. “It’s joyful work,” she says. Theresa received her bachelor’s degree from Harvard University, a Masters in Public Health degree from UNC Chapel Hill and her Medical Degree from Duke University. She completed her residency at the University of California San Francisco. Theresa lives in Raleigh where you can find her spending time with her husband Matt, her three sons, and her three dogs. In her spare time she enjoys cardio drumming and hip-hop dance classes. She is also deeply involved in her Secular Franciscan community.

	Meet NCPeds’ Leaders Danté N. Lewis, MD, FAAP Burlington/Mebane Pediatrics


	Danté N. Lewis, MD, FAAP, began his career as a high school teacher, and his love for education and teaching others has extended into his career in pediatrics. It was that passion for education that led him to join the NCPeds Board of Directors. “I saw that there was a same passion in the Board to educate and help move us forward in the pediatric community and lead on issues that were really pertinent to us as pediatricians,” he said. He currently serves as the managing Partner Pediatrician at Burlington/ Mebane Pediatrics. In addition, he continues his passion for education by working with medical and nursing students from the UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine, Alamance Community College, and Elon University. A practicing pediatrician for 22 years, Danté has been a member of NCPeds since 2019. He looks forward to working with NCPeds to help continue the legacy of collaboration he feels from the organization as it works for expand healthcare access for all children and adolescents across the state. “I was empowered by how Covid was handled by the Pediatric Society. I was hearing stories from other practices, and it showed the collective minds were getting together to be able to provide better care for the communities we serve,” he said. Through it all, Danté’s love for working with children has guided him throughout his career. “That is my biggest passion, I enjoy working with children and young adults because that’s your teachable moment. That’s your future,” he said. Danté completed his undergraduate degree at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and attended medical school at the Medical College of Pennsylvania/Hahnemann University School of Medicine, now named Drexel University School of Medicine. He currently lives in Burlington, and you’ll often find him bicycling, traveling, and spending quality family time RV camping.

	Meet NCPeds’ Leaders Charlotte Riddle, MD, FAAP Advent Health


	Charlotte Riddle, MD, FAAP, has been involved with NCPeds for nearly 30 years and recently joined our Board of Directors to become more involved on a statewide level. “I felt compelled in this stage of my career to transition from the local board work that I’ve done to a larger state organization, and I befriended Olson Huff who I’d watched throughout the years make such a great impact on a state and national level,” she said as she remembered encounters with her late mentor. Dr. Huff’s leadership and advocacy work in addition to that of Dr. Kathleen Clarke-Pearson and Dr. Gerri Mattson, inspired her to seek more involvement through NCPeds. She was also energized after attending a legislative visit in Washington, D.C. where she met colleagues from across North Carolina who were also passionate about improving healthcare for all children. “From that time on we have always reconnected at meetings, and it really inspired me to become more involved after participating on that level. I found a lot of value, both personally and professionally, in connecting with my colleagues from across the entire state,” she said. Charlotte is a pediatrician and a developmental - behavioral pediatrician who currently serves as the Chair of Integrative Behavioral Health at Advent Health. She is based in the Hendersonville/Asheville area and serves a large portion of the western part of the state. Development and behavioral pediatrics is especially important to her and has led her to help in the creation of The Healthy Minds Mental Health Collaborative of Western NC along with her involvement in the St. Gerard House which provides therapy, education, and vocational training for individuals with Autism. She serves on the Governor’s Commission for Children with Special Healthcare Needs and its Behavioral Health Advisory Committee. She has also served on the NCPeds Medicaid Reform Task Force. Charlotte received her bachelor’s degree from Sewanee, medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and completed her residency at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center. After working in private practice for the first 12 years of her career, she pursued a Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics Fellowship at Greenville Children’s Hospital. She has since been on staff at Advent Health and periodically taught as an adjunct professor for UNC School of Medicine. She lives in Laurel Park, N.C. with her husband and two cats who were adopted during the pandemic and has two adult children. She enjoys traveling, cycling, and hiking, especially in the mountains near her home.

	A Word from NCPeds President Kenya McNeal-Trice, MD, FAAP


	Today, I express my gratitude and appreciation for the opportunity to serve the children and families in our state as President of the North Carolina Pediatric Society, and for those who came before me. As I reflect on this moment in time, I center on the word “legacy.” Merriam-Webster defines “legacy” as something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor. I came to North Carolina over 22 years ago to begin pediatric residency training at the University of North Carolina Children’s Hospital. I was mentored and trained by many amazing pediatricians who did not consider their specialty a job or career, but truly a calling. My clinic preceptors were trailblazers not only in pediatric medicine, but also in advocacy for the most vulnerable children in our state. My residency clinic directors were Drs. Bill Hubbard and Wally Brown, and the supervising pediatricians in my weekly clinic were Drs. Alan Cross, Rebecca Socolar, and Bill Coleman. As I observed my mentors daily, I saw them treat every everyone with respect and dignity. I learned the foundations of pediatric medicine, but more importantly, the character, integrity, and moral compass that should guide us daily. They never turned a patient away and did not rest until they found solutions, not only for the children we cared for, but also for parents and families, needing the resources to thrive and be healthy. My first exposure to the North Carolina Pediatric Society was as a resident physician receiving weekly email updates from Steve Shore. After completing residency training and joining the faculty at UNC, Dr. Peter Morris reached out and encouraged me to become active in the leadership of the Society. I was initially hesitant and worried I was not yet ready to serve at that level. It was Dr. Wally Brown who gave me sage advice. Wally told me there would be many opportunities in life to consider, and some I would need to decline. However, when the North Carolina Pediatric Society comes calling, say “Yes.” As always, Wally was right. Of all the wisdom, guidance and friendship he offered, this was perhaps one that forever changed my career trajectory the most. I’ve served for 16 years now and continue forging ahead. NCPeds continues to be the leading authority, advocate, and voice for the health of our state’s children and the profession of pediatrics. We’ve launched a new strategic plan grounded in our core values of Integrity, Respect, Equity, and Collaboration. Our continued leadership and advocacy has led to Medicaid expansion and the merger of Medicaid with CHIP leading to 50,000 more children receiving access to benefits. We’ve partnered with organizations to improve mental healthcare access, advance collaborative care models, and have taken the lead with addressing the decline in the pediatric workforce. Every morning, I start my day with a devotional reading. It allows me to prepare my mind and body for the day’s tasks and center my thoughts on what is truly important. This morning my devotion read “I have fought the good fight, I have finished my race, I have kept the faith.” This is incredibly timely. I am forever grateful for the legacy and mentorship of those who came before me. Recently, our community has grieved the loss of our colleagues, leaders and pioneers in pediatrics. Drs. Bill Hubbard, Olson Huff, and Wally Brown left a legacy of leadership, service, education, and advocacy. As I reflect on those who have gone before us and the proud legacy they leave behind, I am inspired to take up the baton and continue this race until ALL children and families achieve the rights to be healthy and thrive in nurturing communities. I end with a quote given to me by Wally Brown that continues to push me forward “In the end, it will be all right, and if it is not all right, it is not the end.“

	Meet NCPeds’ Leaders Jennifer Lewis Robeson Pediatrics


	Jennifer Lewis recently began her term as Chair of the Practice Managers Section and began serving on the NCPeds Board of Directors. Jennifer has been involved with NCPeds since 2011 and has been active on several committees. She has served on the Practice Managers’ Planning Committee for the past six years and is currently serving on the Peds Council as well. Prior to assuming her position as Chair of the Practice Managers’ Section, she served as Chair-Elect for two years. She has enjoyed the networking opportunities available through her NCPeds involvement. “I absolutely love the collaboration between the pediatric professionals, whether it be practice managers or physicians. We all have a common goal with the same struggles and obstacles, and it is so beneficial to have folks to problem solve with,” she said. “I have met some of the best people being a part of NCPeds. I have really started to enjoy the advocacy role on behalf of my own practice and colleagues.” Jennifer’s career in pediatrics began in 2009 when she started working as a receptionist of a pediatric office. She now serves as the Office Manager of Robeson Pediatrics. In addition, she collaborates with Community Care Physician Network as a Dyad Practice Manager and serves on their Attribution Task Force focused on Panel Management. “I love the quality work that goes into being successful in the pediatric world these days,” she said. Jennifer lives in Lumberton and enjoys spending time with her family, fiancé, and stepchildren. An alumna of East Carolina University, she is an avid Pirates fan and also loves attending concerts and traveling.

	Tailored Plans: Resources and FAQs

Tailored Plans launched July 1. Many thanks to the pediatricians, practice managers, PAs, nurses and others working to make the launch a success and assure that children continue to get the services they need.

What are Tailored Plans?

Tailored Plans are designed (“tailored”) for people who have more complex health needs and who need long-term rehabilitation and care, either in a treatment facility or at home. Services include child and adolescent day treatment services, MST, PRTFs, Innovations Waiver services, breaks for caregivers and institutional and community-based mental health treatment. I have a patient on an ADHD medication that works. How do I make sure they can stay on that medication?

From NCDHHS - For pharmacy PAs between July 1, 2024, and Sept. 30, 2024, Tailored Plans will honor existing pharmacy PAs (from NC Medicaid Direct and other health plans) for the life of the PA and will consider previous PA and current drug therapy as necessary, when making coverage determinations. This flexibility applies to both in-network and out-of-network providers.

I am having a problem and the Tailored Plan is not helping. Where do I turn next?

I’m still trying to contract with an LME/MCO. Will I still be able to care for my existing patients?

From NCDHHS - Between July 1, 2024, and Sept. 30, 2024, in addition to out of network requirements found in the Department’s Transition of Care policy, Tailored Plans must also pay for services for Medicaid-eligible non-participating/out-of-network providers equal to those of in-network providers for 91 days after the Tailored Plan launch. Medically necessary services for physical and behavioral health will be reimbursed at 100% of the NC Medicaid fee-for-service rate for both in- and out-of-network providers.

Will most foster children stay in Medicaid Direct and have care management from CCNC until launch of CFSP?

Yes (but a few children and youth in foster care will move into Tailored Plans).

Is Care Management for young children through CMARC?

CMARC (for eligible children 0 to 5 years) is duplicative of TCM. Therefore, CMARC members that become eligible for TCM transition to the LME/MCO for TCM services; these members will not receive care management from the LHDs through the CMARC program.

Will children less than 3 will be served by the Tailored Plan?

With the exception of those enrolled in the Innovations Waiver or TBI Waiver, individuals who fall into one of the eligibility categories below will remain in Medicaid Direct at TP launch. Individuals enrolled in Medicaid Direct who are Tailored Care Management (TCM) eligible can receive TCM services through the LME/MCO. Of note, minimum age requirements do not apply to TCM and TP eligibility.

Children and youth in foster care
Children receiving adoption assistance
Young adults under age 26 formerly in foster care

Unless they are enrolled in Innovations Waiver, TBI Waiver, TCL, or receiving a state-funded service or ICF-IID service, they will be auto-enrolled in CFSP upon the plan's launch in December 2024

	Meet NCPeds’ Members JeNita Partridge, MD, FAAP Early Career Physicians Committee


	When JeNita Partridge, MD, FAAP, moved to North Carolina in 2023, she was pleased to find a warm welcome from the North Carolina Pediatric Society. “Houston was so large. When I joined here, I immediately got a welcome email and was asked if I wanted to be involved with the Early Career Physicians Committee. I felt it was something I definitely wanted to be a part of, and it made me want to be involved and tell other people about it as well,” she said. JeNita previously lived in the Houston, TX area and now works as a pediatrician at Duke Primary Care Heritage Pediatrics in Wake Forest. This is the first time she’s been involved with the local AAP chapter, and she’s excited to begin her term on the Early Career Physicians Committee so she can meet and mentor physicians and residents. “I’m looking forward to making connections with other physicians in the area as well as hopefully being able to meet some of the residents and establishing relationships and mentoring with residents. I also want to see what other early career physicians are doing as well,” she said. JeNita began her residency eight years ago at Baylor College of Medicine. She completed her medical degree at the Meharry Medical College in Tennessee and her undergraduate degree at Spelman College in Georgia. Her favorite part of her job is working with kids, something that she enjoyed long before she became a doctor. After finishing college, she spent a year living in Malaga, Spain where she taught English to elementary students. When she’s not in the office, you’ll find her trying out the different restaurants in the area, exploring her new home in the Triangle area, traveling and working out at Burn Bootcamp.


	NCPeds 2024 General Fund Campaign Kicks Off


	NCPeds has been leaning into our new strategic plan and mission: improve the health of all North Carolina children and support the professionals who care for them! Building on our strong foundation, we’ve been working to reduce administrative burden, increase payments/oppose reductions, connect more robustly with residents and early career physicians, and help restore some of the joy of the practice of pediatrics. In this world of ever-growing AI and disconnection, what we continually hear from members, is the yearning for connection. We have returned to more in-person events. Last year, our events offered providers the opportunity to earn up to 13.25 CME and 10.0 MOC-2, while Practice Managers had the opportunity for 12 CEUs. We continue our popular weekly touch-base Solution Share calls and have begun to go out more to our members. We have also grown our staff so that we can assure a more personalized and timely response to member needs. Give to the 2024 General Fund to strengthen NCPeds for the work ahead. Donating is easy! 	Meet the Proposed Slate of Officers for 2024-2025


	The NCPeds Annual Meeting will be held Aug. 23-25, 2024 at the Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club in Durham. In addition to the many great educational sessions we have planned, attendees vote for new NCPeds officers for the coming year. 	2024 White Coat Wednesday


	On June 5, we hosted the 2024 White Coat Wednesday at the North Carolina General Assembly in Raleigh. A huge thank you to everyone who came out and walked the halls of the Legislature in support of children and adolescents in our state!

	Meet Our Speaker Alan Schroeder, MD, FAAP Annual Meeting Speaker


	Alan Schroeder, MD, FAAP, has spent much of his career researching the concept of Safely Doing Less in pediatric care. It’s a topic that he’ll be sharing with us when he provides the keynote speech at the 2024 NCPeds Annual Meeting. “Even early on in my residency it was pretty clear to me that a lot of what we did didn’t make much sense and didn’t have much evidence-based proof. A lot of these interventions were causing harm and weren‘t doing much good. I embarked on a journey to tease out the risk benefit profile of these common interventions,” he said. After noticing that many accepted medical practices were not always evidence-based, Schroeder began examining the associations between some of these interventions and their outcomes, demonstrating at times that we can deliver similar outcomes with fewer interventions. “I’ve found over the course of my career that any time I try to dive into the literature to understand the background of common practices, I’m always surprised at how tenuous the evidence base can be. Once these teachings become embedded in our practice, we think of them as a truth, and they are hard to overturn,” he said. One specific area that he discovered could use a “safely doing less” model was in prolonged IV antibiotic use in babies with various common bacterial infections. For bacteremic UTIs, for example, his findings demonstrated prolonged IV antibiotics do not provide any apparent benefit over shorter IV courses followed by oral antibiotics. Because prolonged IV antibiotics are tough on the baby, the family, the hospital, and the healthcare system, these early transitions have obvious benefits. Through his keynote address, he’ll review his research regarding Safely Doing Less and discuss and provide examples of overdiagnosis, a common but underappreciated driver of low-value care. “I‘m very passionate about this topic and the work that I do, and I’m just thrilled and honored to share my work and my thoughts with a great group of pediatricians. I really look forward to learning from them as well,” he said. As the son of a doctor, Schroeder didn’t initially plan to follow in his father’s footsteps. However, he realized in college that he always loved working with children. He completed his undergraduate degree at Stanford University and his medical degree at Georgetown University. He now lives in Palo Alto, CA. and works as the Associate Chief for Research in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and is a Clinical Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine and the Division of Critical Care.


	Project Firstline


	Launched by the CDC in October 2020, Project Firstline was formed to address longstanding gaps in infection control knowledge and practice in U.S. Healthcare settings. The AAP quickly joined the CDC in this important work and provided chapters grant resources to promote IPC topics. With the chapter grants winding down, the AAP is in the process of making Project Firstline resources "evergreen" to ensure that these valuable resources will remain available to the pediatric healthcare community. Thank you for all of the IPC work you do which helps keep your colleagues, patients and their families safe!
